The ability to visualize x-ray and neutron emission from fusion plasmas in 3D is critical to understand the origin of the complex shapes of the plasmas in experiments. Unfortunately, this remains challenging in experiments that study a fusion concept known as Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) due to a small number of available diagnostic views. Here, we present a basis function-expansion approach to reconstruct MagLIF stagnation plasmas from a sparse set of x-ray emission images. A set of natural basis functions is "learned" from training volumes containing quasi-helical structures whose projections are qualitatively similar to those observed in experimental images. Tests on several known volumes demonstrate that the learned basis outperforms both a cylindrical harmonic basis and a simple voxel basis with additional regularization, according to several metrics. Two-view reconstructions with the learned basis can estimate emission volumes to within 11% and those with three views recover morphology to a high degree of accuracy. The technique is applied to experimental data, producing the first 3D reconstruction of a MagLIF stagnation column from multiple views, providing additional indications of liner instabilities imprinting onto the emitting plasma. Macromolecular crystallography generally requires the recovery of missing phase information from diffraction data to reconstruct an electron-density map of the crystallized molecule. Most recent structures have been solved using molecular replacement as a phasing method, requiring an a priori structure that is closely related to the target protein to serve as a search model; when no such search model exists, molecular replacement is not possible. New advances in computational machine-learning methods, however, have resulted in major advances in protein structure predictions from sequence information. Methods that generate predicted structural models of sufficient accuracy provide a powerful approach to molecular replacement. Taking advantage of these advances, AlphaFold predictions were applied to enable structure determination of a bacterial protein of unknown function (UniProtKB Q63NT7, NCBI locus BPSS0212) based on diffraction data that had evaded phasing attempts using MIR and anomalous scattering methods. Using both X-ray and micro-electron (microED) diffraction data, it was possible to solve the structure of the main fragment of the protein using a predicted model of that domain as a starting point. The use of predicted structural models importantly expands the promise of electron diffraction, where structure determination relies critically on molecular replacement.

The α-hydroxyethyl radical (CH3·CHOH, 2A) is a key intermediate in ethanol biochemistry, combustion, atmospheric chemistry, radiation chemistry, and astrochemistry. Experimental data on the vibrational spectrum of this radical are crucially important for reliable detection and understanding of the chemical dynamics of this species. This study represents the first detailed experimental report on the infrared absorption bands of the α-hydroxyethyl radical complemented by ab initio computations. The radical was generated in solid para-H2 and Xe matrices via the reactions of hydrogen atoms with matrix-isolated ethanol molecules and radiolysis of isolated ethanol molecules with x rays. The absorption bands with maxima at 3654.6, 3052.1, 1425.7, 1247.9, 1195.6 (1177.4), and 1048.4 cm−1, observed in para-H2 matrices appearing upon the H· atom reaction, were attributed to the OHstr, α-CHstr, CCstr, COstr + CCObend, COstr, and CCstr + CCObend vibrational modes of the CH3·CHOH radical, respectively. The absorption bands with the positions slightly red-shifted from those observed in para-H2 were detected in both the irradiated and post-irradiation annealed Xe matrices containing C2H5OH. The results of the experiments with the isotopically substituted ethanol molecules (CH3CD2OH and CD3CD2OH) and the quantum-chemical computations at the UCCSD(T)/L2a_3 level support the assignment. The photolysis with ultraviolet light (240–300 nm) results in the decay of the α-hydroxyethyl radical, yielding acetaldehyde and its isomer, vinyl alcohol. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results suggests that the radical adopts the thermodynamically more stable anti-conformation in both matrices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we observed natural methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, which are a type of unconventional natural gas resources, using x-ray computed tomography (CT). Because CH4 hydrates are formed by hydrogen bonding of water molecules with CH4, material decomposition becomes challenging when CH4 hydrates coexist with liquid or solid water in natural sediments. Tri-contrast (absorption, refraction, and scattering) imaging was performed via diffraction enhanced x-ray CT optics using monochromatic synchrotron x rays. The quantitative characterization of the contrast changes successfully enabled the decomposition of CH4 hydrates coexisting with frozen seawater (ice) in natural sediments obtained from the Okhotsk Sea. This study reveals complementary structural information about the microtexture and spatial relation among CH4 hydrates, ice, and pores by utilizing the distinct physical properties of x rays when passing through the materials. These results highlight the exceptional capabilities of high-resolution multicontrast x-ray tomography in materials science and geoscience applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SignificanceX-ray-induced acoustic computed tomography (XACT) offers a promising approach to biomedical imaging, leveraging X-ray absorption contrast. It overcomes the shortages of traditional X-ray, allowing for more advanced medical imaging.AimThe review focuses on the significance and draws onto the potential applications of XACT to demonstrate it as an innovative imaging technique.ApproachThis review navigates the expanding landscape of XACT imaging within the biomedical sphere. Integral topics addressed encompass the refinement of imaging systems and the advancement in image reconstruction algorithms. The review particularly emphasizes XACT's significant biomedical applications.ResultsKey uses, such as breast imaging, bone density maps for osteoporosis, and X-ray molecular imaging, are highlighted to demonstrate the capability of XACT. A unique niche for XACT imaging is its application in in vivo dosimetry during radiotherapy, which has been validated on patients.ConclusionsBecause of its unique property, XACT has great potential in biomedicine and non-destructive testing. We conclude by casting light on potential future avenues in this promising domain.

The interiors of neutron stars reach densities and temperatures beyond the limits of terrestrial experiments, providing vital laboratories for probing nuclear physics. While the star's interior is not directly observable, its pressure and density determine the star's macroscopic structure which affects the spectra observed in telescopes. The relationship between the observations and the internal state is complex and partially intractable, presenting difficulties for inference. Previous work has focused on the regression from stellar spectra of parameters describing the internal state. We demonstrate a calculation of the full likelihood of the internal state parameters given observations, accomplished by replacing intractable elements with machine learning models trained on samples of simulated stars. Our machine-learning-derived likelihood allows us to perform maximum a posteriori estimation of the parameters of interest, as well as full scans. We demonstrate the technique by inferring stellar mass and radius from an individual stellar spectrum, as well as equation of state parameters from a set of spectra. Our results are more precise than pure regression models, reducing the width of the parameter residuals by 11.8% in the most realistic scenario. The neural networks will be released as a tool for fast simulation of neutron star properties and observed spectra.

Neutron diffraction is one of the three crystallographic techniques (X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction) used to determine the atomic structures of molecules. Its particular strengths derive from the fact that H (and D) atoms are strong neutron scatterers, meaning that their positions, and thus protonation states, can be derived from crystallographic maps. However, because of technical limitations and experimental obstacles, the quality of neutron diffraction data is typically much poorer (completeness, resolution and signal to noise) than that of X-ray diffraction data for the same sample. Further, refinement is more complex as it usually requires additional parameters to describe the H (and D) atoms. The increase in the number of parameters may be mitigated by using the `riding hydrogen' refinement strategy, in which the positions of H atoms without a rotational degree of freedom are inferred from their neighboring heavy atoms. However, this does not address the issues related to poor data quality. Therefore, neutron structure determination often relies on the presence of an X-ray data set for joint X-ray and neutron (XN) refinement. In this approach, the X-ray data serve to compensate for the deficiencies of the neutron diffraction data by refining one model simultaneously against the X-ray and neutron data sets. To be applicable, it is assumed that both data sets are highly isomorphous, and preferably collected from the same crystals and at the same temperature. However, the approach has a number of limitations that are discussed in this work by comparing four separately re-refined neutron models. To address the limitations, a new method for joint XN refinement is introduced that optimizes two different models against the different data sets. This approach is tested using neutron models and data deposited in the Protein Data Bank. The efficacy of refining models with H atoms as riding or as individual atoms is also investigated.

Oblique shock wave–interface interactions of gases and liquids have been extensively studied in shock tubes using optical methods to measure equation-of-state (EOS) parameters. However, this is difficult with solids due to their opaqueness to visible light. X ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) has the penetrative strength to probe solids while still being sensitive to mass density and enhancing the visibility of material boundaries. We investigate the accuracy and repeatability of measuring the mean value of the average mass density (areal density divided by thickness) over region S (B S) and flow deflection angle (θ) from XPCI images of a sample. To that end, a Hough transform-based method for measuring θ is developed. To measure B S , the XPCI image intensity probability density function (PDF) is modeled accounting for the spatial distribution of x ray energy, scintillator response, and pulse-to-pulse variation in the x ray intensity. In addition, a Monte Carlo-based algorithm for computing the B S PDF is developed. Both methods are validated on an impact-generated oblique shock wave interacting at a solid polymer-to-polymer interface. This is accomplished through a comparison to hydrodynamic simulations using well-established EOS. Under the modeling framework for the XPCI image intensity, B S is computed with an accuracy of < 0.1 % and precision of 3%–5%, while θ has an uncertainty of 0.2 ° , respectively. Millimeter-thick methylammonium lead tribromide (MAPbBr3) single crystal x-ray detectors have recently raised attention due to their high x-ray attenuation efficiency and good charge transport properties. However, an intriguing feature of the photocurrent response of MAPbBr3 detectors has been largely overlooked in the literature. After biasing, transient sensitivity is measured under x rays at short-circuit (bias = 0 V), thus revealing a large remnant electric field that builds up under bias. Here, we exploit the x-ray sensitivity of MAPbBr3 detectors at zero-bias in order to probe the internal built-in field, as well as to investigate the charge transport properties of the perovskite material. Our model derived from the Hecht equation is able to fully rationalize the response of the detectors both at short-circuit and under moderate applied bias. Moreover, we provide a method for the estimation of the internal electric field, and for the sum of the electrons and holes mobility–lifetime products μ e τ e + μ h τ h. This general method could extend to any perovskite-based x-ray detector exhibiting transient sensitivity at zero-bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the temporal correlation between very-high-frequency (VHF, at frequencies of the order of 10–100 MHz), ultrahigh-frequency (UHF, at frequencies within 1–6 GHz), and x-ray (with photon energies more than 10 keV) emissions, which accompany the development of a high-voltage discharge initiated in a long gap at voltages up to 1 MV. The x-ray and UHF emissions are found to emerge starting approximately from the prepulse current onset observed before the discharge gap breakdown and both gradually decay coming to this instant. The UHF emission spectrum is represented with frequencies up to 6 GHz, with the highest spectral power being achieved within 1–2 GHz. The radio emission power drops sharply at frequencies below 1 GHz and increases closer to 150 MHz with the highest spectral power of VHF radiation being reached within 60–90 MHz. The VHF emission can appear before the discharge current and UHF emission onsets in the form of 100-ns-long prepulses, and its intensity significantly increases as the UHF emission starts. The analysis of the temporal correlation between x rays, VHF, and UHF radiations, discharge current, and voltage waveforms indicates that the generation mechanisms of the discharge electromagnetic radiations are difficult to be interpreted in terms of the developing or colliding streamer concepts. Three sets of heteroepitaxial diamond crystals grown under nominally identical process conditions on Ir/YSZ/Si(001) substrates have been studied with respect to structural defects, chemical purity, and x-ray induced photoconductivity (PC). The dislocation density that varied systematically between 10 7 and 10 9 cm − 2 had a minor influence on dark conductivity and photoconductive gain G. In contrast, the substitutional nitrogen (N N ) and substitutional boron (N B ) defects, which are both present at very low concentrations (≤ 1 ppb), turned out to be the crucial factors controlling the electrical behavior. Small differences between both resulted in variations of the photocurrents by up to 5 orders of magnitude. The maximum in G of 0.75 × 10 4 was measured in the sample with highest dark conductivity. It could be explained conclusively within our model calculations on gain formation by N N ≤ N B . For low gain samples, we found N N > --> N B . However, the measured G values were far from theoretical predictions. This indicates a dominating role of additional traps. After x-ray switch-off, persistent photoconductivity (PPC) was observed in high gain samples. It was attributed to an energetic barrier hampering the recharging of nitrogen atoms by hole capture. The fragmentation of fulminic acid, HCNO, after excitation and ionization of core electrons was investigated using Auger-electron–photoion coincidence spectroscopy. A considerable degree of site-selectivity is observed. Ionization of the carbon and oxygen 1s electron leads to around 70% CH+ + NO+, while ionization at the central N-atom produces only 37% CH+ + NO+, but preferentially forms O+ + HCN+ and O+ + CN+. The mass-selected Auger-electron spectra show that these fragments are associated with higher binding energy final states. Furthermore, ionization of the C 1s electron leads to a higher propensity for C–H bond fission compared to O 1s ionization. Following resonant Auger–Meitner decay after 1s → 3π excitation, 12 different ionic products are formed. At the C 1s edge, the parent ion HCNO+ is significantly more stable compared to the other two edges, which we also attribute to the higher contribution of final states with low binding energies in the C 1s resonant Auger electron spectra. BackgroundRadiation dosimetry is essential for radiation therapy (RT) to ensure that radiation dose is accurately delivered to the tumor. Despite its wide use in clinical intervention, the delivered radiation dose can only be planned and verified via simulation. This makes precision radiotherapy challenging while in-line verification of the delivered dose is still absent in the clinic. X-ray-induced acoustic computed tomography (XACT) has recently been proposed as an imaging tool for in vivo dosimetry.PurposeMost of the XACT studies focus on localizing the radiation beam. However, it has not been studied for its potential for quantitative dosimetry. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using XACT for quantitative in vivo dose reconstruction during radiotherapy.MethodsVarian Eclipse system was used to generate simulated uniform and wedged 3D radiation field with a size of 4 cm ×$ \times \ $ 4 cm. In order to use XACT for quantitative dosimetry measurements, we have deconvoluted the effects of both the x-ray pulse shape and the finite frequency response of the ultrasound detector. We developed a model-based image reconstruction algorithm to quantify radiation dose in vivo using XACT imaging, and universal back-projection (UBP) reconstruction is used as comparison. The reconstructed dose was calibrated before comparing it to the percent depth dose (PDD) profile. Structural similarity index matrix (SSIM) and root mean squared error (RMSE) are used for numeric evaluation. Experimental signals were acquired from 4 cm ×$ \times \ $ 4 cm radiation field created by Linear Accelerator (LINAC) at depths of 6, 8, and 10 cm beneath the water surface. The acquired signals were processed before reconstruction to achieve accurate results.ResultsApplying model-based reconstruction algorithm with non-negative constraints successfully reconstructed accurate radiation dose in 3D simulation study. The reconstructed dose matches well with the PDD profile after calibration in experiments. The SSIMs between the model-based reconstructions and initial doses are over 85%, and the RMSEs of model-based reconstructions are eight times lower than the UBP reconstructions. We have also shown that XACT images can be displayed as pseudo-color maps of acoustic intensity, which correspond to different radiation doses in the clinic.ConclusionOur results show that the XACT imaging by model-based reconstruction algorithm is considerably more accurate than the dose reconstructed by UBP algorithm. With proper calibration, XACT is potentially applicable to the clinic for quantitative in vivo dosimetry across a wide range of radiation modalities. In addition, XACT's capability of real-time, volumetric dose imaging seems well-suited for the emerging field of ultrahigh dose rate "FLASH" radiotherapy.

The interdomain electron transfer (IET) between the catalytic flavodehydrogenase domain and the electron-transferring cytochrome domain of cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) plays an essential role in biocatalysis, biosensors and biofuel cells, as well as in its natural function as an auxiliary enzyme of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase. We investigated the mobility of the cytochrome and dehydrogenase domains of CDH, which is hypothesised to limit IET in solution by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). CDH from Myriococcum thermophilum (syn. Crassicarpon hotsonii, syn. Thermothelomyces myriococcoides) was probed by SAXS to study the CDH mobility at different pH and in the presence of divalent cations. By comparison of the experimental SAXS data, using pair-distance distribution functions and Kratky plots, we show an increase in CDH mobility at higher pH, indicating alterations of domain mobility. To further visualise CDH movement in solution, we performed SAXS-based multistate modelling. Glycan structures present on CDH partially masked the resulting SAXS shapes, we diminished these effects by deglycosylation and studied the effect of glycoforms by modelling. The modelling shows that with increasing pH, the cytochrome domain adopts a more flexible state with significant separation from the dehydrogenase domain. On the contrary, the presence of calcium ions decreases the mobility of the cytochrome domain. Experimental SAXS data, multistate modelling and previously reported kinetic data show how pH and divalent ions impact the closed state necessary for the IET governed by the movement of the CDH cytochrome domain.

Aggregated and hyperphosphorylated Tau is one of the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Tau is a polyampholytic and intrinsically disordered protein (IDP). In this paper, we present for the first time experimental results on the ionic strength dependence of the radius of gyration (Rg) of human Tau 4RS and 4RL isoforms. Synchrotron X-ray scattering revealed that 4RS Rg is regulated from 65.4 to 58.5 Å and 4RL Rg is regulated from 70.9 to 57.9 Å by varying ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.592 M. The Rg of 4RL Tau is larger than 4RS at lower ionic strength. This result provides an insight into the ion-responsive nature of intrinsically disordered and polyampholytic Tau, and can be implicated to the further study of Tau-Tau and Tau-tubulin intermolecular structure in ionic environments.

We present a time-dependent theory for non-resonant x-ray emission spectrum (XES) and normal Auger spectrum (NAS) calculation, based on a fully quantum description of nuclear dynamics using the vibrational wave packet concept. We compare two formulations of the time-dependent theory, either employing a two-time propagation scheme or using spectral integration over the electron energy continuum. We find that the latter formulation is more efficient for numerical simulations, providing a reasonable accuracy when the integration step is shorter than the lifetime broadening of the core-ionized state. We demonstrate our approach using the example of non-resonant x-ray emission from a water molecule, considering the lowest core-ionized K−1 and first core-ionized shake-up K−1V−1V1 intermediate states. These channels exemplify the developed theory on bound–bound, bound–continuum, continuum–bound, and continuum–continuum transitions. Our results suggest that the time-dependent approach is efficient for simulating XES involving dissociative states, whereas the time-independent approach, based on Franck–Condon factors, is more efficient for bound–bound transitions expressed as discrete frequency dependence in the energy domain. X-ray radiography offers the ability to noninvasively inspect the internal structure and material composition of objects. Dual-energy radiography allows material discrimination but is limited in quantitative material measurements due to the broad nature of the interrogating x-ray spectrum. Spectral radiography detectors provide an observation of not just the number of x rays that are transmitted through a sample but also the spectrum. Here, experimental validations of a method to use spectral x-ray radiography to accurately quantify the uranium mass in a powder are presented. An accurate system response model was developed, which includes a model of the incident x-ray source spectrum and a pixel-wise detector response that describes how the transmitted x rays were observed. Further, a calibration to account for the effect of partial x-ray attenuation was developed. The method is demonstrated to be capable of estimating the uranium mass in a variety of uranium oxide powders to a bias of − 0.01 ± 0.62 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has long been used for the study of high-valent iron intermediates in biological and artificial catalysts. 4p-mixing into the 3d orbitals complicates the pre-edge analysis but when correctly understood via 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and Fe L-edge XAS, it enables deeper insight into the geometric structure and correlates with the electronic structure and reactivity. This study shows that in addition to the 4p-mixing into the 3dz2 orbital due to the short iron-oxo bond, the loss of inversion in the equatorial plane leads to 4p mixing into the 3dx2-y2,xy, providing structural insight and allowing the distinction of 6- vs 5-coordinate active sites as shown through application to the Fe(IV)═O intermediate of taurine dioxygenase. Combined with O K-edge XAS, this study gives an unprecedented experimental insight into the electronic structure of Fe(IV)═O active sites and their selectivity for reactivity enabled by the π-pathway involving the 3dxz/yz orbitals. Finally, the large effect of spin polarization is experimentally assigned in the pre-edge (i.e., the α/β splitting) and found to be better modeled by multiplet simulations rather than by commonly used time-dependent density functional theory.

Over 50 years of development, synchrotron based X-ray microscopy has become a routine and powerful tool for the analysis of nanoscale structure and chemistry in many areas of science. Scanning X-ray microscopy is particularly well suited to the study of chemical and magnetic states of matter and has become available at most synchrotron light sources using a variety of optical schemes, detectors and sample environments. The Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an extensive program of soft X-ray scanning microscopy which supports a broad range of scientific research using a suite of advanced tools for high spatio-temporal resolution and control of active materials. Instruments operating within an energy range between 200–2500 eV with spatial resolution down to 7 nm and sub 20 picosecond time resolution are available. These capabilities can be routinely used in combination with a variety of sample stimuli, including gas or fluid flow, temperature control from 100 to 1200 K, DC bias and pulsed or continuous microwave excitation. We present here a complete survey of our instruments, their most advanced capabilities and a perspective on how they complement each other to solve complex problems in energy, materials and environmental science.

With three FDA-approved products, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are under intensive development for delivering wide-ranging nucleic acid therapeutics. A significant challenge for LNP development is insufficient understanding of structure-activity relationship (SAR). Small changes in chemical composition and process parameters can affect LNP structure, significantly impacting performance in vitro and in vivo. The choice of polyethylene glycol lipid (PEG-lipid), one of the essential lipids for LNP, has been proven to govern particle size. Here we find that PEG-lipids can further modify the core organization of antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-loaded LNPs to govern its gene silencing activity. Furthermore, we also have found that the extent of compartmentalization, measured by the ratio of disordered vs ordered inverted hexagonal phases within an ASO-lipid core, is predictive of in vitro gene silencing. In this work, we propose that a lower ratio of disordered/ordered core phases correlates with stronger gene knockdown efficacy. To establish these findings, we developed a seamless high-throughput screening approach that integrated an automated LNP formulation system with structural analysis by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and in vitro TMEM106b mRNA knockdown assessment. We applied this approach to screen 54 ASO-LNP formulations while varying the type and concentration of PEG-lipids. Representative formulations with diverse SAXS profiles were further visualized using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to help structural elucidation. The proposed SAR was built by combining this structural analysis with in vitro data. Our integrated methods, analysis, and resulting findings on PEG-lipid can be applied to rapidly optimize other LNP formulations in a complex design space.

High-flux capable semiconductor x-ray detectors are essential in various applications, but the detrimental effects of detector polarization limit their use in many cases. Here, we studied the polarization of perovskite CsPbBr3 semiconductor detectors using ultrahigh flux synchrotron x rays (106–1012 photons s−1 mm−2 at 58.61 keV). The CsPbBr3 detectors did not show immediate polarization prominently until a flux higher than 1010 photons s−1 mm−2. Using the pump-and-probe technique, we visualized the spatial and temporal effects of polarization. The polarized region, represented by reduced photocurrent, extended beyond the area under direct irradiation, and the reduced photocurrent persisted after potential de-polarization treatments. We found that stronger applied electric fields and fewer carrier traps can mitigate polarization, represented by less photocurrent deficit. By examining the detectors' current response under controlled ambient light, low, and high-flux x rays, we studied the trap filling and release behavior of CsPbBr3. We discovered that the polarization is caused by partial detector damage due to deep defects generated by ultrahigh flux x-ray irradiation. Our work provides insight into CsPbBr3 polarization under extremely intense x-ray radiation and shows that reducing crystal defects and increasing detector bias voltage are effective solutions. We investigate the interaction between two magnetic layers separated with a normal metal insertion layer (Ti, Pt, and Ru) using x-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR). We measure the amplitude and phase of the ferromagnetic resonance of both layers. Our results indicate that a ferromagnetic exchange coupling between two layers is a dominant coupling mechanism for a thick insertion metal layer. Based on the exchange coupling model, we extract the smallest value of the indirect exchange coefficient of 1.2 μJ/m2, which corresponds to an exchange field of about 0.36 mT. While this value is difficult to measure with other experimental tools, we were able to measure the small value because XFMR detects a resonance phenomenon of a thin layer generated by an oscillating indirect exchange and the Oersted fields with a phase and layer resolved observation. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of implant body diameter, platform diameter, and the use of transepithelial components on implant-abutment connection (IAC) microgap width. Materials and Methods: In total, 16 tests were performed on four commercial dental restoration models (BTI Biotechnology Institute). Different static loads were applied to the embedded implants according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14801, using a customized loading device. Measurements of the microgap were taken by means of highly magnified x-ray projection in situ in a micro-CT scanner. Regression models were obtained and compared through an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). To quantify the effect of each variable, t tests (α = .05) of experimental results were performed. Results: Under 400 N, using a transepithelial component for the dental restoration, the microgap width was reduced by 20% (P = .044). Meanwhile, a 22% microgap reduction was observed when the implant body diameter was increased by 1 mm (P = .024). Finally, increasing the platform diameter by 1.4 mm led to a microgap reduction of 54% (P = .001). Conclusion: The use of a transepithelial component in dental restorations reduces the microgap width in IACs. Characterization of the inner-shell decay processes in molecules containing heavy elements is key to understanding x-ray damage of molecules and materials and for medical applications with Auger-electron-emitting radionuclides. The 1s hole states of heavy atoms can be produced by absorption of tunable x rays and the resulting vacancy decays characterized by recording emitted photons, electrons, and ions. The 1s hole states in heavy elements have large x-ray fluorescence yields that transfer the hole to intermediate electron shells that then decay by sequential Auger-electron transitions that increase the ion's charge state until the final state is reached. In molecules, the charge is spread across the atomic sites, resulting in dissociation to energetic atomic ions. We have used x-ray/ion coincidence spectroscopy to measure charge states and energies of Iq+ and Brq′+ atomic ions following 1s ionization at the I and Br K-edges of IBr. We present the charge states and kinetic energies of the two correlated fragment ions associated with core-excited states produced during the various steps of the cascades. To understand the dynamics leading to the ion data, we develop a computational model that combines Monte-Carlo/Molecular-Dynamics (MC/MD) simulations with a classical over-the-barrier model to track inner-shell cascades and redistribution of electrons in valence orbitals and nuclear motion of fragments. Hemoglycin, a 1494 Da polymer composed of iron and glycine, has been detected in several carbonaceous meteorites. Iron atoms close out the ends of a 5 nm anti-parallel glycine beta sheet and contribute visible and near infrared absorptions that are not present with glycine alone. The 483 nm absorption of hemoglycin was discovered in theory and then observed on beamline I24 at Diamond Light Source. Light absorption in a molecule involves a coupled lower set of states receiving light energy that causes a transition into an upper set of states. In the reverse process, some energy source, such as an x-ray beam, populates the upper set of molecular states, which then radiates light as it returns to the lower "ground" set of states. We report on visible light re-emission during x-ray irradiation of a hemoglycin crystal. The emission is dominated by bands centered at 489 and 551 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
